FIC: Cherokee America by Margaret Verbie

November: Fiction Pick

This is a work of historical fiction, set in 1875 in the Cherokee Nation, land now part of Oklahoma and Arkansas. In those days it was unclear how law was enforced and that situation attracted some unfriendly white people.  The novel is based on actual persons know to the author, who is herself Cherokee and a descendant of some of those figures. The main character, Cherokee, is the matriarch of a wealthy family, who employed black persons to help run the household. The book allows one to see some details of the way red, black and white skinned people interacted on this rural farming area.  The story involves two murders and their handling by member of the community.
