FIC: Washington Black by Esi Edugyan

November: Fiction Pick

This highly readable work of fiction takes place 1830-1836, starting in Barbados on a sugar plantation.  It is written from the point of view of a young black slave, named George Washington Black, who is saved from a life in the sugar fields by a brother of the plantation owner.  The book chronicles this wealthy upper class British family, with a penchant for science, who profit from the plantation, and the situation of the slaves. It’s really well done.
