April: Fiction Pick
This is a work of fiction based on the life of Lee Miller, an American woman, who went to France in the 1930’s. She had a successful career as a high fashion model in the US before she went to Europe, but she wanted to reinvent herself as a photographer, not a subject of photographs. She became an assistant to Man Ray, part of the artist scene in Paris, and eventually became a war photographer, moving with the American troops and documenting the concentration and other war atrocities. This novel dwells on her difficulties being a woman and gaining respect for more than her beauty, in a man’s world. A good read.
