February: Fiction Pick
This is an earlier book by the author of Washington Black. It is a story about jazz musicians, in Europe, in 1939, just as Hitler is rising in power. The author has done a good job of capturing the language of jazz musicians and their distinctive take on life. The relationship between the bass player, narrator, and the drummer, his friend since childhood, is particularly amusing. Despite some thrilling moments, it is mostly a laid back story. An enjoyable read.
