School Library & Public Library

This library is both the public library for the Town of Mount Desert and the school library for Mount Desert Elementary School.

Photocopying, Printing & Scanning

There is a copy machine for public use at the circulation desk on the first floor. Copies are $.25 each. The library’s public access computers can print black and white documents for $.25 each. The librarians can print color and double-sided documents for you at the same cost, email them to printthis@nehlibrary.org. The copy machine can scan and email documents for you at no cost. Sorry, no faxing.

Computers & WiFi

The library has 5 public access computers for adults (4 Macs and 1 PC). We also have 3 computers in the children’s room and 2 in the young adult area. Computers are first come, first serve and there is a 30 minute time limit if others are waiting. We have 2 PC laptops and 4 ipads that can be checked out for use within the library. The library also offers free WiFi in the building and within the immediate vicinity available 24/7.

One on One Tech Help Appointments

Schedule an appointment with one of our staff for tech help. We can help with email, using the internet, saving and sending documents, and using a laptop, tablet or phone.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

We participate in a statewide inter-library loan system and can order nearly any book from other libraries within the state of Maine, as well as out-of-state. We receive deliveries twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. Most items arrive in about one week. To request an inter-library loan item, call the library or email your request to neh-ill@nehlibrary.org.

Study Rooms & Mellon Room

The library provides two small study rooms for private study or small meetings. We also allow larger groups and organizations to use the Mellon Room during and after operating hours. Learn more.

Digital Resources

cloudLibrary & Hoopla

Northeast Harbor Library patrons have access to two collections of ebooks and other digital media.

CloudLibrary, a large collection of audiobooks and e-books, is available to libraries and school belonging to the Maine Info Net consortium.

Hoopla‘s collection includes audiobooks, e-books, graphic novels, music, television, documentaries, and films. The library pays per item borrowed with Hoopla; you may borrow up to five items per month.

To access either collection you will need to create an account using your Northeast Harbor Library patron ID number. Both cloudLibrary and Hoopla have apps available for most mobile devices; you can also use them with an internet browser, click the links above.

Digital Maine Library (Formerly Marvel!)

The Digital Maine Library provides access to full text articles and abstracts from magazines, newspapers, journals and reference books to assist in research.

Mango Language Learning Program

TumbleBooks is a collection of e-books and digital resources for grades K-6, and includes graphic novels, talking picture books, read-along chapter books, National Geographic videos, non-fiction books, playlists, as well as books in Spanish and French. 

Mango Languages has over 72 courses of language learning programs, including special topics such as “Spanish for Librarians,” children’s programs, ESL programs, and Mango Premiere subtitled films.

Archive & Digital Archive

Our archivist can help you with your archival research. Currently we are in the process of digitizing the items in our archive, to see what we’ve uploaded so far, visit our Maine Digital Library.

Museum Passes

We offer free passes to several museums – the Bangor Discovery Museum, the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, and the Portland Museum of Art. Inquire at the desk for more information!

Book Sale – Every Tuesday & Thursday, 3:30 – 5 pm

Our book sale is located in the basement and features gently used books, music CDs, audiobooks and DVDs. Pay by donation; all proceeds benefit the library! If you’d like to volunteer with the book sale, please contact Kate Young at kyoung@nehlibrary.org.

We also have books for sale in the front entrance year round, during all library operating hours.
