MDI Historical: Say What? MDI Lore & Tall Tales

Whether you’ve lived on Mount Desert Island your entire life, spent every summer here since childhood, or just stepped on the island this morning, you’ve likely been told a few "facts" about the island that are more fiction than truth.

Join us for an evening of myth-busting and storytelling as we uncover the truth behind the island’s most persistent lore. From romanticized tales of the Wabanaki and Acadia National Park’s founding to the Great Fire of 1947 and stories of ghosts and lighthouse keepers, MDI Historical Society staff will guide you through the legends and the facts. They’ll also share how to continue your journey with the free digital history tour, "What Happened Here: MDI History Adventure" featuring over 20 sites across Mount Desert Island.

Expect a fast-paced, image-filled presentation that explains not just the truth, but why these stories were created and why they still stick around today. Think you know your island history? Come test your knowledge. New to the island? Learn some local history and fascinating stories. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.

This program is a collaboration between the Northeast Harbor Library and the MDI Historical Society. It will be offered in person and via Zoom, and recorded for later viewing. If you do not receive a confirmation email after registering, please check your spam or junk folder.
