October: Three Local Artists – Judith Blank, Nancy McCormick & Philip Heckscher

The Northeast Harbor LIbrary is pleased to welcome three local artists to exhibit work this October – Judith Blank, Nancy McCormick, and Philip Heckscher.

Judith Blank makes woven rugs in the tradition of Swedish and Norwegian loom weaving. She says, “For me, it’s all about color and texture, and arranging materials side by side and seeing their interaction. Color in fabric is particularly beautiful. I’m privileged to use the good quality cloth found in the thrift shops of MDI in my weaving. Sometimes it feels like I’m weaving family stories, people’s history.” Judith’s workshop and gallery is on Norway Drive.

Nancy McCormick’s paintings are a reflection of Mount Desert Island as seen from a multitude of perspectives:  its shifting seasons, changing light and layered landscape. Nancy’s materials and process are of primary interest to her.  She is influenced by many artists, known and unknown, and their forms of self-expression over the course of history:  deteriorating frescoes, Chinese ink-brush paintings, 19th-century travel landscapes, needlepoint samples, the work of Mark Rothko and Paul Klee.

Philip Heckscher has had a life-long devotion to the art of Chinese calligraphy. He has studied Chinese calligraphy with artists in the US and China; he uses traditional materials — ink, ink stone, rice paper and Chinese brush— to write characters for display and appreciation. He gets his inspiration from prose and poetry translations, auction catalogues, examples of ancient masters in copy books and rubbings, street graffiti, tattoos, and fellow calligraphers.

There will be a reception for this exhibit on Thursday, October 15th from 4 to 6.  All are welcome to come meet the artists.

This exhibit is available to view in the Mellon Room during the library’s operating hours from October 1st to October 31st. Occasionally, the Mellon room is booked for private use; if you are making a special trip to see the exhibit, please call ahead to check availability at 207 276 3333. Some work will be for sale; a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the library.
