We’re pleased to welcome Lou Stanley to the Mellon Room for November.
“I was once told that if I didn’t figure out who I was and what I was supposed to be doing, it
would eventually eat me alive.
My guiding principle comes from Nick Cave: it isn’t the artist’s job to save the world, but to
save the soul of the world. I believe living with original art we love is good for the soul. In my
own paintings, I turn to people doing the work that brings them joy, especially around boats and
the working waterfront, which I know intimately.
I began studying marine painting with Don Demers and landscape painting with Joe Paquet in
2018 and have since painted on residencies from the Moroccan desert to Val Camonica, in
Northern Italy.
A recent recipient of a Stobart Fellowship, I have been juried into several national exhibitions. A
study from my “Living Water” series is currently in “Working” at the Salmagundi Club, where I
have been a member since 2024. From June to September, I work out of the Art Room at Little
Island in Bass Harbor. My work is available year-round at loustanleyfineart.com.”
This exhibit is available to view in the Mellon Room during the library’s operating hours during the month of November. Occasionally, the Mellon room is booked for private use; if you are making a special trip to see the exhibit, please call ahead to check availability at 207 276 3333. Some work will be for sale; a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the library.
