The Northeast Harbor library is excited to host an exhibit titled “Order to Chaos, Peaceful to Whimsical, Fiberart by Cristy M. Benson” from December 1st to 31st in the Mellon Room.
“From modern folk art rugs to abstract improvised quilts, this exhibit tracks my work over the past decade. I started my color journey through my hooked rugs, which are an attempt to document and celebrate this gorgeous place where we live. A subtle combination of similar colors added a depth and warmth to my rugs which I could not have predicted. This color play inspired and now dominates my current quilt work as I attempt to transition between colors in my quilts in ways that follow rules but also defy obvious structure.
In the midst of it all, I have attempted to honor student activists protesting gun violence (an unfortunately never aging topic), celebrate all those who worked to make us safer in the midst of the pandemic (including a mask quilt which now hangs at the Maine CDC), and knitted a whole lot of frogs,” says the artist.
There will be a reception open to the public on Tuesday, December 20th, 4:30 – 6:30 pm. All are welcome! Some of the work from the show will be for sale at the reception and throughout the month.
The exhibit will be in the Mellon Room and available for viewing during library hours. The room is occasionally booked for private use, please check our calendar or call ahead if you are making a special trip to see the show. If you have questions about the exhibits at the Northeast Harbor Library, please contact Kate Young at kyoung@nehlibrary.org or 207 276 3333.
